@randahl - just FYI, Canada is not far behind Agent Orange’s attitude towards sustainable energy thru things like wind farms. The province of Ontario shut down construction of wind farms, while Alberta banned them (and solar farms) entirely, despite both having environments that are excellent for both. Instead, they and the federal government want to promote mini-nuclear and the burning of gas and oil for electricity.

@randahl Maybe! The US insists on old technology, which by the way is not cheap at all (only the necessary infrastructure is insane, let alone the rest). At the same time, renewable energies become cheaper and cheaper (and they NEVER run out). The price of all this will be influenced by geopolitics, hopefully peaceful. The US and Russia (only the governments!) are simply being stupid. They see short-term gain, but in the long run, they’ll be left behind. #sustainability #climatechange
Congratulations Denmark, in my opinion you are on the right track when it comes to renewable energy.
Here in Germany, we still have a lot of catching up to do, and our current government is proving to be particularly incompetent.
As for the Americans, I would argue that if the citizens really wanted to, they would have driven this clown out of the circus ring long ago. But they haven't.

On a yearly bassis, wind delivers around 59 percent of all power in Denmark, with less in the summer and more in the winter. This is still way ahead of the world average of 40 percent.

@randahl It's funny. The conservative world still thinks in terms of fossil fuels and nuclear energy, the latter of which takes decades to build. Meanwhile, we are developing renewable energy sources such as solar and wind at such a rapid pace that by the time those nuclear power plants are ready, we will literally no longer need them.

Once people believe there’s no chance to stop climate change, no chance to stop sea level rise, the value of his assets will drop to zero. It won’t happen once the water hits the stairs of the lobby but when people stop to believe the narrative. “Green energy” and wind in particular reminds people of something is at odds with this world and so he must fight it with whatever he can.

Well, from the same volcanic zone. The Wairākei geothermal plant has been generating electricity for over 60 years. It's towards the northern end of the Taupo zone, while Ngauruhoe is towards the south. I'm told I saw one of the maunga's most recent eruptions, though I was too young to remember it. We were having a family picnic in the park and my big sister spotted the ash plume

It is quite funny that our problems are opposite. You spend a lot of power cooling down your houses, but in Denmark most houses do not even have an air-conditioning system.
We on the other hand spend a lot of power plant energy on heating in the -10 °C winters.
@randahl we're all sharing the same planet, anyone looking to destroy it for a healthy profit should be answering to everyone, not just their own citizens. Nobody should have enough money to be able to launch shit into space. If so, they better have a reason that benefits us all, or they need to go.

Honest question. In Denmark, are your houses heated with electricity or gaz?
I live in Quebec and most of our houses are heated with electricity, so when we hear 92% from wind turbines, it blows our minds because the largest part of our electricity usage goes to heating and it is a lot.
If your houses are heated with electricity and your produce 92% of it with wind turbines, well, I'm impressed.
@MichelPatrice 69 percent of Danish homes are heated by district heating plants. These plants primarily burn biomass like wood pellets which is CO2 neutral. The heat is distributed through large diameter well insulated pipes.
But the Danish building code requires very well insulated homes: Typically 200 millimeter Rockwool in air tight brick walls, and 300 millimeter Rockwool in the roofs.
Many homes have a backup heating source like a wood stove or a heat pump in the livingroom.

Burning wood is not CO2 neutral. Even if you plant the same amount of trees you burn, it'll take 80 years until the CO2 is bound again. We don't have 80 years to become CO2 neutral.

@Mr_GHARice I understand your point, but I do not think this is accurate. There is not just 1 tree in all of Europe, which is used for heating, and then we have to wait 80 years to grow a new tree.
Because trees are used for heating, we grow millions of trees all the time, which consume CO2 all the time, while our heating plants generate CO2 from burning trees. That is CO2 neutral.

Think of burning wood like a credit card. If you're financially sound, using the card's limit isn't a problem. But we're completely indebted in terms of CO2 emissions and, so speaking, we'll have a huge problem at the end of the month. That's why burning wood is a problem.
