This is the written summary of a presentation I gave at the annual meeting of the International Fertiliser Society (you can watch the presentation here: https://video.ploud.fr/w/qb3a8rXPxW7QQmWN7uBBKS)
I discuss the limitations of sewer-based sanitation in the face of climate change and increasing water scarcity: can we still afford the amount of water that is needed for sewers to effectively carry fecal matter all the way to the treatment plant?
Obviously I also mention how alternative management methods are being tested throughout Europe, including in large neighborhoods in Hamburg, Sneek, or Helsingborg (and soon Paris).

First up, something I mentioned this morning: the second price hike from #RaspberryPi in the last two months. This time the $25 added to top-end SKUs is joined by another $60(!). Why? Well, the AI bubble: RAM is expensive now, everything has RAM, so everything is expensive.
It won't be the last price hike of the year, either, I'll tell you that now.
Rather more welcome news from the world of #science next, as engineers develop a chip capable of turning waste heat into useful computation - which could mean more efficient computers.
Maybe. If it scales: they haven't proven it can be used for more than a single operation yet...

Two years ago, scientists from @JLBe and its network published a study on the sustainable use of #smartphones.

It showed that typical #socialmedia apps such as #Instagram, #TikTok, #YouTube, etc. on #cellphones conflict with a number of sustainability goals.
Among other things, they cause high #energy consumption, which is not incurred directly on the smartphone, but in #datacenters and transmission networks. A large proportion of the #electricity consumption is due to the fact that these apps do not respect #privacy and data protection, but instead spy on users.
The use of #Mastodon and other #Fediverse services is more sustainable because much less data is exchanged between users' smartphones and the service instances.
Reading notes from the event that mention how Twitter was an improvement over RSS in terms of user experience.
Another good example would be people switching from pirating media over to signing up for streaming services. It was the easier option.
With Blacksky recently achieving full independence from Bluesky, and other projects following behind, it'll be interesting to see who will handle federation better.

@maupuo I agree. But Trump will not end up extinct. Republicans will let Europeans carry all the early innovation costs for decades while they burn cheap fossil fuel. Then, when Europe has paid these costs, the US will order wind turbines at much lower prices.
I believe, this will be the source of intense international conflict in the coming years.
@randahl Maybe! The US insists on old technology, which by the way is not cheap at all (only the necessary infrastructure is insane, let alone the rest). At the same time, renewable energies become cheaper and cheaper (and they NEVER run out). The price of all this will be influenced by geopolitics, hopefully peaceful. The US and Russia (only the governments!) are simply being stupid. They see short-term gain, but in the long run, they’ll be left behind. #sustainability #climatechange
