Okay so honest question… I’ve heard several very terrible things about Matrix (mostly lack of moderation), and also a few happy users. What’s your opinion? Bit of framing:

- I would run my own server
- Use cases: DMs and bridging other platforms to simplify things
- Not super interested in the issues with public group chats unless you have something truly novel to add; decentralized problems have well known drawbacks

Boosts welcome.

@ianthetechie I've been running a Matrix (Synapse) server in Docker for my family for 5-6 years or so. Federation enabled, never tried bridges. The biggest recurring problem has been when people get new phones and forget to transfer their session keys. The server itself has been stable for me. It's advisable to stay somewhat on top of updates.

I think the spam and abuse stuff mostly happens via large public rooms on matrix.org, which I haven't needed so far. I've never seen any of it.

@ianthetechie I’ve tried repeatedly and rather hard to like Matrix but I always end up disappointed.
