As much as I love the idea of Delta Chat, and even tried to set up my own relay server (which is too complicated and failed), hosting a poll in an echo chamber is going to skew the results somewhat.

I'm firmly in the #XMPP camp, and have been self-hosting a @snikket_im server since 2020, although I'm still interested in running a Chatmail relay for those who are not willing to replace WhatsApp with anything other than Signal.

I'm certain that if this poll was held by the XMPP community, the balance would swing in a different direction. Same for #Matrix.

My favorite part of the job has always been people, and it’s even more true at FOSDEM.

In those “backstage” pictures you can see what I love. People having fun, people taking care of each other, people helping each other.

FOSDEM is where I can thank those who make the software I use. It’s where we can meet. It’s where I can give back.

Like every year I’m exhausted and looking forward to the next one. Thanks all for being part of this.

yes but I like #matrix...

it's complicated. I'd love the simplicity of one ID but I also think social media (public) and social networking (close community) need to be somewhat separate. old school twitter was a great example of the former vs the latter encompassing how we connect with family, friends and interest groups on Facebook. I'd argue phone calls and texting is social networking too.

anyway, the distinction matters for moderation. basically everybody vs just people I trust.

The last week I've seen/been part of a few discussions regarding #Matrix on Mastodon and Lemmy. To help the world heal - let me offer this tiny suggestion:

If your views on Matrix come from pre-Element X client times, just scrap those and be open to the fact that things are different now.

I was there. I was burnt by having to support family members with encryption key issues. I had to abandon Dendrite as server software.

Since I switched to a dockerised Synapse and all (extended) family members now using Element X we've had absolutely zero issues. None. Zilch.

... and those family members range from 9 to 78 years of age. Matrix is our daily driver, on Android, iOS, macOS, Linux and Windows.

That was all, carry on.

Okay so honest question… I’ve heard several very terrible things about Matrix (mostly lack of moderation), and also a few happy users. What’s your opinion? Bit of framing:

- I would run my own server
- Use cases: DMs and bridging other platforms to simplify things
- Not super interested in the issues with public group chats unless you have something truly novel to add; decentralized problems have well known drawbacks
