#QuestionOfTheDay what's an experience with a piece of media or work that felt interminably long. Not necessarily something that is long but that felt exceeding long or tedious, like it would never end and/or just kept going going and going.

I read the Asimov "Foundation" trilogy once. Ages ago I picked up a single-volume hardbound copy for cheap, figuring "well it's a foundation-al, ha ha, entry in the SF canon, I should do this" and... oh gods. It's so tedious. You can tell it's from before our current standards & expectations for SFnal storytelling had properly gelled.

So. Boring. To this day I couldn't tell you anything that happens, or IF anything happens.

@greyduck @ami_angelwings It's funny, but I always actually liked Asimov's more cerebral style. IMO a lot does happen, but not much actual action, which I guess is what most people are actually looking for.

@nazokiyoubinbou @ami_angelwings I feel like in Foundation particularly, a lot is *described*, rather than a lot *happens*. "Hari Seldon did this. The Empire did that. Some people over there did a thing." It's a historybook for a future that never was/shall-be and while that's kind of a neat idea, it's an *interminable* reading experience.

@greyduck @nazokiyoubinbou @ami_angelwings There are two sequels to the OT, written in the 80s -- Foundation's Edge and Foundation and Earth -- that are much more open-ended and plot driven, and written from the subjective experience of the characters rather than a god's-eye view.
