These are myths. Anthropologists claim that myths arise when people need to make sense of some dislocation or terrible event that is happening to them, and a false explanation is psychologically better than no explanation at all.
In West Africa during the slave trade, people believed in powerful witches that drank blood from humans. This sounds like nonsense, until you learn that there existed secret societies of local élites that kidnapped people to supply slave traders with fresh blood.

@gimulnautti hopefully nothing major. I did read your post and confirm I understood what you were talking about. Just reflecting on how myths/urban legends/conspiracy theories, no matter how outlandish, seem always to contain some truth. Read the book referenced if you are curious, it makes for a great read.
