There's a lot going on in the United States. If you plan to exercise your legal right to protest, we kindly remind you to not RSVP online, "check in" on a social app, or share your name or email with protest organizers.

Protesting a tyrannical government is core to American culture, and Constitutionally enshrined. You can do so by simply showing up, while maintaining good opsec & data privacy.

@privacyguides and AIUI it is good to let trusted friends or family who will not also be there know where you’ll be, so if you get abducted by feds someone will know to look for you

@privacyguides I was thinking of setting up Signal. but just saw another post on Mastodon saying that AI is compromising the encryption. Maybe time to start keeping pigeons?

@KateConnors not a bad idea 🐦 but that's not a good reason to. Signal is safe to use, and has the strongest security on the market 👍

@privacyguides it does, however, mean you’ll miss things like weather cancellations from the organizers, or suggested next steps.

@megmuttonhead here in Minnesota I don't think we do weather cancellations 😅

I would strongly urge folks to double-check this information on their own, rather than put themselves on a centralized list of protestors.

@privacyguides @megmuttonhead My understanding is that these RSVPs are also used for organizers to figure out how many support staff they need (legal observers, people to maintain safety, etc.), so it does serve an important purpose. Why not just use a disposable email and fake name (if it asks for one)?

@privacyguides
I also suggest masking. if you think they aren't doing facial recognition and building a blacklist you are naive.

@privacyguides If you can afford one, buy a burner phone with cash and never have both it and your regular phone near each other while powered on. Here's a blog post that covers this.

@Yoshi @privacyguides I am instantly inherently distrustful of this information source due to the low effort crappy AI artwork.

@privacyguides This is an excellent article with many valid points for living in a police state. BUT, 99% of Americans will say, "tl;dr". Most Americans only want 1) cheap beer, 2) a ball team to cheer, and 3) a group to fear (please excuse the cynicism.) In 50 years, as the USA begins to recover, someone will read your post and say, "Gosh, this will be our bible to avoid future flusterclucks." I suggest a short summary at the top of the 5-7 most important points. Peace, out.
