Finally got around to giving Starfleet Academy a crack. TBH I didn't expect to like it. Everything I'd seen about it made it seem goofy and lame, including the trailers. I assumed I'd probably give up 10-15min in, as I did with The Acolyte. But I actually really enjoyed the first episode, more than enough to watch a few more.

It's really not bad. Even that's underselling it. If someone wants space battles every episode they'll probably be unhappy, likewise if they want bumpy-headed humanoid alien-of-the-week.
But if you understand that these are *cadets* at an Academy that has been closed for >100 years because of an anomalous event that broke a LOT of stuff quadrant-wide & who are dealing with the whole "WTF am I doing thing" ... it's really pretty good.

As long as it doesn't turn Saved By The Bell in space, or scifi Blossom, or The Wonder Years in Spandex we're good ; )
Right there with you. I don't think the creative team would let that happen … BUT … Paramount-Skypants is now the definition of stupid, so …
@strypey Star Trek is often at its best when it's at its goofiest and lamest. In Darmok, Picard and Dathan were fighting an invisible monster lol

Do you think Predator was goofy too? If so, I don't know what to say other than there's no accounting for taste. To me, the Darnok episode was anything but goofy and lame.
@strypey go back and really pay attention to Patrick Stewart pretending to fight air lol
I'm pretty sure the creature was just invisible because they didn't have the budget for anything more in that late in the season

Go back and really pay attention to Arnie and co pretending to fight air. There's a big difference between something being goofy in hindsight because of the limited FX of the time, and being inherently goofy from the moment it's made. Darmok and Predator are the former, the best example of the latter is The Room.
