#WritersCoffeeClub 27 What's a technical skill you think should be more widespread?

Basic file management on a computer. I've seen many people (young and not so young) save *EVERYTHING* in one directory (I refuse to call them "folders") and later can't find anything. They should learn that basic skill in school, but no. No one teaches them that. I'd blame phones for this but this trend started in the Windows 95 days with the "My Documents" directory…=-|

@ixtlidekami I once had to clean out a 286 PC running MS-DOS 3.x and Word Perfect 4.2 that had been used by agency temps for a few years. 2000 files in C:\ and a dir command took 15 minutes to execute (directories were stored as a linked list). This was in 1990.

@cstross
It must have been a "glorious" experience…=)

I once did something like that in OS/2 2.0, just to see how much I could "destroy" the system. I had to reinstall it, so I tried to kill it first. It took it in stride, but I swore to never do this again. And now, look at me with a pinterest directory with more than 100,000 images and the promise to sort them. At least this directory is inside the "pictures" in a dedicated drive…=)
