Cryptographic public-keys are one way that one can have an identity (on the Fediverse, and elsewhere) while also having privacy — through a pseudonymous identity.

Yes, we have Fediverse IDs such as:

@joeblow@example.com

But a (non-delegated) public-key can function as a PORTABLE form of identity on the Fediverse.

@reiver

Would it be human-readable?

IIRC on #ZeroNet #P2P, you "mined" for a few hours & got a very long string of letters & numbers for an ID (altho you could set a name & avatar to go with it)

@klu9

Regarding:

"Would it be human-readable?"

A public-key itself wouldn't typically be human-legible / human-readable, but —

№1:

You can have a representation of the public-key that is user-friendly, and —

№2:

You can (in a way) "attach" data to it that makes it (in a sense) human-readable/ human-readable.
