It is feasible to provide a better open-source, privacy-focused alternative to Google Maps (including online features) if we receive enough donations and community support. This is one of our goals, alongside helping users understand and contribute to OpenStreetMap for everyone's benefit. https://www.makeuseof.com/wanted-to-love-open-source-maps-app-going-back-google/

@organicmaps the only solution to have true real time tracking is to have a common solution, not dependent on any software / house.
Any maps solution should ask people to contribute with their data to an Agpl service online, responsible for collecting and anonymise data and provide public stats.
Any open solution could than have enough data to provide "parking slots" warning and any research institution could have real traffic data and anyone should be able to inspect code and data collected.
@rickyx That's the goal. The problem is that someone needs to sponsor this approach (think not only about the development and bugfixing, but also about reliable servers and internet traffic). And here we rely on our users and active contributors ❤️
@organicmaps It is feasible to get more donations if you don't kick people off the team and behave unprofessionally. #CoMaps
@organicmaps ❤️
> Because it respects your privacy and doesn't collect data, it has no idea that the highway you're on has turned into a parking lot.
I guess some users imagine privacy as an unchangeable tradeoff like this. (Personally, privacy is so important that this isn't even a tradeoff to me.)
The systems that communities support are systems that can grow better. And sometimes intermediate friction is worthwhile, like I've been learning the traffic patterns of my cities.
@almonds @organicmaps
I'm with you on that. More appreciative of privacy and supporting an excellent project.
I've done half of my long distance driving with paper map books
@organicmaps i got a feeling you lost a bit of the community some time ago. Sadly.
@organicmaps @grischard So you're open source, now ? After disgusting your community and contributors, after closing some of your code to prevent replicability ? The audacity.
@Kalytis @grischard Organic Maps app source code always was, is, and will be open-source. Anyone saying the opposite is deliberately lying and following someone's agenda.
@organicmaps @Kalytis @grischard really smooth changing the scope of the question. And I still want to know whether the person who got you kicked from github for vacationing in a "disputed territory" is still on your team? Will they be receiving some of the donations?
@chebra @Kalytis @grischard you messed everything up, please check the facts. There was an (unsuccessful) attempt to hijack the project; people responsible for that (including the one vacationing in a disputed territory, which triggered a ban of the OrganicMaps org on GitHub) are not on board anymore. Why are you spreading the FUD? What are your goals?
@organicmaps @chebra @grischard you're a disgrace
@organicmaps @Kalytis @grischard my goal is to avoid supporting putin's supporters. I've been asking you directly about this many times before, you were gaslighting. This is the first time you said anything about a hijacking attempt and it raises more questions than answers. Come clean or I'll have to continue asking.
@chebra @Kalytis @grischard the position of the current OM's board and contributors was always public and clear, and if you follow our chats and facts, you would know that, together with the facts about the hijacking. You could contact our team directly at any time for details instead of throwing dirt on the internet.
P.S. Our contributors, relatives, and friends are suffering now under daily attacks in Ukraine.
@organicmaps @chebra @Kalytis you got a blog post or something that people can read?
@grischard @chebra @Kalytis@piaille.fr not yet. Such a blog post would advertise bad guys, so it should be done carefully.
It is sad that only a few people, after a long time, were interested to know the details/truth and contacted us directly. Many people blindly believed and followed misinformation on the Internet.
