It's curious that predictive algorithms are used for criminalization but not for the prevention of crime at the source.

Imagine being able to identify people who are likely to need food or rent assistance, but are unlikely to reach out for it. Or, understanding the environmental triggers that cause mental health crises, being able to get people the help they need beforehand.

But somehow there is never enough money for helping people, but always enough to lock them up. #PredictivePolicing #AI

Tech companies and governments could partner to make society better somewhat, but all of the money is in criminalization.

@Ashedryden Clay Shirky once said that any organization that is created to solve a problem will eventually grow into the role of sustaining that problem, because if the problem ends none of the institution's participants have jobs.

I think about that a lot.
