Good morning! If you’re on mastodon.social (or another server running nightly builds) you can begin quoting posts in your posts (quooting?) starting today. Remember, you control whether you can be quoted, and can always retract your post from a specific quote. And you can quote me on that!

Goodbye, coherent, readable threads.
@Gargron
Quost. I'll have news on quost this morning, thanks
@Gargron I look forward to seeing it in action, as I've already been makeshift "quoting" others for some time (Such as this quote I made on a toy collecting post).
One question about the ability to retract quotes though; if someone used a quote in a way that broke server rules, does removing your post from their quote negatively impact your ability to report it, or make it more difficult to prove your case? Is there any kind of "history" the moderators can look back on for context, or does it become your word against theirs at that point?
@Gargron WE DID IT! THE TERM IS OFFICIAL!
something that wasn't clear to me and perhaps of interest to others about #quoteposts
i knew this:
in your preferences you can change the setting to allow #quoteposting on your toots globally. to anyone/ followers only/ or just yourself
but i didn't know you could also do it per post
so you might allow anyone to quote post you, as a general policy
but then on one particular post of yours you may disallow a #quotepost as you see fit
> you can begin quoting posts in your posts (quooting?) starting today
Even if my host chooses not to implement it, I'll survive just fine with Markdown-ish quotes like above, which has the added flexibility of being able to quote specific bits of text from a post and thus also the ability to be used repeatedly in a reply for different bits of text from the same post. Quooting can't do that, can it?
@Gargron I am new to Mastodon and not very good with social media in general. How do you quote people?
@Gargron Just have to wait for our preferred/required (Windows accessibility needed for me to be efficient) supports this quoting feature which I really want to use
@Gargron We've played with them on infosec.exchange a few days ago already :)
@Gargron noting that the form quooting that someone mentioned the other day shows itself here too 🙂
@Gargron well just tried a quote boost of some one else's quote boost, which I just discovered was a quote boost of another toot.
@Gargron "Quooting" (quote posts) only applies to Public Posts correct...? 🤔
isn't it a quote boost?
@Gargron It should be mentioned, that all quote options are only applicable for Mastodon. All other Fediverse platforms, that have implemented quoting since the beginning of the Fediverse, will be unaffected. This is the great diversity of the Fediverse. 🤘🏻
@Gargron
How does this work with phone apps? Will there have to be a new release of each app to accommodate this?
So a user's posts really are called toots, then? 😉🤷♂️
@Gargron i am running nightly but theres no qouting option.
@Gargron hm, the "boost" and the "favorite" are clickable and I can see who boosted and favouroted. But this seems not to work (on this post) for quotes. Bug or feature?
@Gargron good morning Eugen! im very new to this app, and i dont know how to use it yet, but im gonna cpmment here, cheers!
@Gargron
I's done, all quotes made! :D
@Gargron So it now takes two clicks to boost. You need to add quote somewhere else, it's really bed where it is. Should be in the "reply" area, surely?
@Gargron
I came to absolutely despise that feature on Twitter.
But this level of control over it makes it a very good implementation.
How is this done?
@Gargron I guess an update for the official Android app is in the works then.
@Gargron quoots for my toots, sugar for ma honey. 🎶
@Gargron Big big thanks!
Hey @ivory when can we expect the update supporting 'proper' quotes? 4.5.0 is around the corner!
@Gargron Oh dear lord. The feature Fedi doesn't need ready to weaponised by the keyboard warriors.
@Gargron What? I thought that was one feature they were _never_ going to add.
@Gargron Ah, the supreme kai of Mastodon speaks. Seriously though, thanks for this, can't wait to see it implimented on my instance.
@Gargron Thanks! You're doing an amazing job!
@Gargron is there a rough ETA for stable release? I’m going to tell people if they ask later in the year 😅
@GossiTheDog @Gargron We are targeting next month for the 4.5 release, we need a bit of time to ensure there are no big issues reported now that we enabled it on mastodon.social, then we will release 4.5.0-beta1 (hopefully at the end of this month)
