In 1989 I managed to convince the CS department to buy a Cube (in part for FrameMaker DTP, in part for the DSP). For me at least, it was transformative, eclipsing the Sun workstations around it in terms of productivity and functionality.
A minor twist on the Apple acqui-merger: My understanding from several engineers is that by then the OS was basically being mothballed in favour of focussing solely on WebObjects.
@span mmalc I had a friend who used a Cube and saw it running a few times. It was impressive at the time and still is.
@span amoroso I wanted a NeXT box *so much* back in the day. Hell, I'd buy one *now* if I had room for it. Astonishing machines.
@span marsroverdriver Back in the day NeXT and other workstations were obscenely expensive for hobbyists like me.
