To defend free speech we need to stand up for the rights of those we disagree with to speak freely. Everyone has the right to articulate their views. It is disturbing that political violence and extremism threatens this. #freeexpression

@JamesBaker it's nice that his promotion of fascism has stopped though, don't you think? Shame it took a gun to do it but pragmatically speaking he wouldn't have stopped voluntarily.
@Paul I don’t think you can really silence speech or ideas with violence or censorship. It increases their reach. This hasn’t reduced the beliefs he preached, it will amplify them. You can only defeat ideas through exposure and open dialogue and debate.
@JamesBaker I think the last decade or so has proven the opposite of that
@Paul Well we will have to agree to disagree then. Have a good day.
@JamesBaker I do just want to point out that "let fascists have their say" is an incredibly dangerous take to anyone who's not a cis straight white man. Free speech is important but you have to define the limits of that idea if you actually care about marginalised people's lives more than an abstract ideology.
@Paul But be careful when fighting imaginary or real facists - "Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you”.
