Happy birthday to Kathleen Lonsdale DBE FRS (née Yardley, 1903-1971) who solved a longstanding #chemistry conundrum of the shape of benzene, here with her drawing of electron density for hexachlorobenzene (green) & model of hexamethylbenzene explore shape in different forms. Her husband said, “Before prison it might have bothered her to go to Buckingham Palace. Afterwards, Holloway or Buckingham Palace were all the same.” 🧵

Above the hotel is a glowing infinity symbol. The size of countably infinite sets, like all natural numbers {1,2,3, .... ∞ } is denoted by Aleph Nought ℵ0 shown on the two flags.
Each print is printed by hand in indigo, lavendar, mint green and dark navy blue ink on Japanese kozo (or mulberry) paper, 8” x 10” (20.3 cm by 25.4 cm).

you simply shuffle all the guests over one room and make room for the next guest. You can repeat this argument for one more guest, two more guests, three more guests, ...infinity more guest... infinity groups of infinite guests, etcetera!
The print shows a grand hotel on a steep angle (with a vanishing point at infinity of course), labelled “Hilbert’s Grand Hotel” below a cameo of Hilbert himself, and the slogan “No vancancy. Check in now!” 🧵2/

Happy #SquirrelAppreciationDay! Despite the opinion of some people in my home there’s a colony of white squirrels in Toronto’s Trinity-Bellwood Park! I know. I’ve seen them. This is a portrait of one of them, climbing head-down a maple tree, along with the words “Legendary White Squirrel of Trinity-Bellwoods”. It’s sort of become a running joke to question the reality of 🧵

This linocut shows an improbability of puffins in all senses of the words. The collective noun for a group of puffins is an “improbability”. Isn’t that marvellous? Puffins look rather improbable to me, with their tuxedo coats and tails and their red, Roman noses... I mean beaks. These are Atlantic puffins, to be precise. Actually, there are a few different words for a group of puffins, including “a puffinry of puffins” (which seems 🧵

My Lino block print shows a fox running across the snowy ground with the aurora borealis lighting up the sky. I have made a series of arctic animal prints with the northern lights. This one also alludes to Finnish mythology of the Northern Lights. Happy birthday to Russian #mathematician & writer Sofia Vasilyevna Kovalevski (1850-1891). Her contributions to analysis, differential equations & mechanics include Cauchy-Kovalevski theorem & the famed Kovalevski top. She was 1st woman appointed to full prof in N Europe or to serve as editor of a major sci journal. She is also remembered for her contributions to Russian literature.
