What have I become?!? My mom just asked me if we're free at the end of May (weekend of 23rd-24th) because she'd like to visit* us in Paris... and my FIRST thought was: wait maybe that weekend there will be #JDLL in Lyon?
Now the highlights of the calendar year for me are #FOSS conferences. Truly.
I was pleased to tell my mom that no, JDLL is the following weekend, so we are indeed free.
(*In my defense, we visit my parents in Italy every month-two months, and we do video calls every day, so it's not as if a FOSS conference took precedence. I'm a bona fide Italian daughter after all)
Anyway looking forward to my parents' visit... and ALL the FOSS conferences I can attend this year 😅
Speaking of #JDLL, some of you may remember that I had the honor of speaking at the 2025 edition, invited by the awesome @yunohost team to share my experiences self-hosting with them.
I asked my husband to tag along and bring our daughter so she could see me speaking on stage... and see that mamma does cool stuff outside the house too.
Well, my daughter brought up Lyon and the conference on the way to school the other morning. I asked her: "did you have a good time?" and her immediate response was: "I didn't understand anything you said!"
Me: "Well, it's normal, I talked about grown up stuff."
Child (4 then, 5 soon): "But what did you say?"
And then I proceeded to try to explain the concept of #selfhosting and #digitalsovereignty and how empowering it is to use a tech stack independent of #BigTech platforms... in an accessible way that she would understand.
It was SO DIFFICULT.
I probably failed spectacularly and she still doesn't understand. But it made me think that it'd be worth trying to explain this to older kids... like pre-adolescents or in their early teens? Maybe a project for another time.

Good morning Fedi friends!
Rehearsing my #BerlinFediDay presentation this morning to make sure I can do it in 12 minutes tops…. Because I have a little surprise at the end, so I can’t use my full 15 minutes 😉
A tale of 2 rehearsals: back in May, when I was getting ready to present at #JDLL in Lyon I had to rehearse in the back of the car next to my 4-year-old… who was listening to children’s stories in French over the car system. For 4 hours. It was a marathon rehearsal for me, a real test of concentration.
I thought: easy for this one - I’m traveling alone in the plane, I’ve got a 90 minutes flight… so I can practice my speech in peace. Well, think again. My two French seatmates spent the entirety of the flight loudly discussing playing music gigs and their experiences with various drugs 😵💫
Which scenario did I prefer for prepping my speech? Neither one… thankfully I’ve got 2 hours in my hotel room now 😅
I look forward to meeting Fedi friends and followers later today and I hope I will do a good enough job conveying my love for the Fediverse.
And I can’t wait to listen to the presentations by @andypiper

🏕️ my adventures in #selfhosting - day 165 (VFX edition) 🎞️
Good morning Fedi friends!
I've been quiet on here (it's a temporary pause, I promise) as I have been spending every second of free time - that doesn't include childcare - editing the fediverse promo video.
The video will premiere next week at a really exciting event, right after a presentation by an absolute legend. I'm experiencing low key anxiety / palpitations, rushing to get the film ready for that.
On the to do list: sound mix, fixing some VFX animations, adding a couple of slides to the end credits, color grading, doing subtitles, exporting the video and uploading it to my PeerTube. Gaaaaah!
On the self-hosting side, I have to admit it's incredibly empowering to know I can put it on my PeerTube. Super grateful to #YunoHost for that.

As a geeky side note, I had to edit a link in the article... and it would not update on my site. Awww the wonders of #Varnish cache. It's really THAT powerful. So even though I don't have time to do proper self-hosting tasks these days, I still went into my VPS and used command lines to clear Varnish cache. It counts for something, right?
