Had a very pleasant phone conversation with this month's winner. He's an older retired guy. Former business owner. He was sick of Windows and started using Linux on his own a couple years ago.

So the computer I will be getting to him will have Linux on it (though he may erase and install his own). He prefers Linux Mint, but wants to try Zorin.

Ieri ho installato #linux su un vecchio portatile di una quasi ventenne che ha a breve l'esame di informatica. Con 4gb di ram ho comunque optato per #linuxmint con cinnamon come ambiente desktop. La ragazza è felice perché il suo vecchio portatile adesso è una scheggia.

Naturalmente, nel mezzo della conversazione scatta la domanda sul perché io usi linux. Tra le varie motivazioni dico anche che non c'è pubblicità. La reazione è stata:

"COME NON C'È PUBBLICITÀ???"

Questa è una generazione che più di ogni altra è semplicemente costituita da acquirenti. E ancora non lo sa.

Apparently my USB Drive has arrived. When I get home I shall be creating a #LinuxMint boot drive and kicking Windows out 😎

It’s going to take a while to un-Americanise what I can, but it’s a start.

Many will suggest #LinuxMint which I've used and installed an 10+ Windows computers. It's a great distribution, easy to install and has been very stable in my experience. I've been very happy with my switch.

My #LinuxMint laptop will no longer turn on the keyboard backlight. I've tried things like 'xset led on' and setting an extra keyboard shortcut for KbdLightOnOff in Keyboard Settings. no luck.

My laptop is old, and maybe the backlight LED is fried. So:

Does anyone know a way to query what Linux *thinks* the LED state is? That'd help me figure out if my problem is software or hardware, at least.

The design of the Cinnamon Desktop on #Mint is fantastic with easy to use UI that's not enshitified by a company that produces things like Liquid Glass because they've got to always be shitting out the next new thing because profit, profit, profit.

There is no Wall Street/ shareholder pleasing going on.

This is an OS and software ecosystem by and for users, NOT constant grift and rent seeking.

No ads, no intrusion, no surveillance.
