wild kubuntu seem to have the nextcloud desktop app in the "store" regular ubuntu did not.
I had to run:
sudo apt install nextcloud-desktop
the nextcloud website has you download some appImage file that I have no idea how to use.
also nextcloud on kubuntu was slow as ass. settings pane took 30 seconds to open.
Hmm. After waking up kubuntu Firefox will not load, the system monitor is not responding and restart action seem to not respond.
Perhaps I'm not really using the right words.
I think I don't care about backups as much as I want seemless cloud file sync.
dropbox has not been seemless. Google drive does not seem to be working on KDE.
Converting some NTFS drives to ext4
GSConnect was interesting but I couldn't get the android phone to mount and I could only transfer one file at a time through the share option.
I'll just mount the phone with USB. wires are always better.
Resources, le logiciel de monitoring par défaut du futur Ubuntu, sort une nouvelle version le 1er février.
Essayez de faire monter les pourcentages avant cette date !
Hmmmm can I outsource this tech question to the Fediverse..?
The hinge on my Lenovo laptop has broken and can't be easily repaired so I need a new laptop.
I will install Ubuntu onto it and wondered if anyone wanted to recommend a suitable and *inexpensive* replacement laptop from e.g. Curry's in the UK?
So much choice and I don't know what to pick. 14 inch screen and light is good. #Linux Thanks in advance!
@tansy
I really love the Lenovo X1 Carbon
With it's 1kg weight it completely trumps my MacBook Pro.
I operate one with #Ubuntu and the one of my daughter with @elementary
I got both (gen7, 16gb) from eBay for around 250€. The SSD is exchangeable

HOW EASY IS IT TO MOVE FROM MICROSOFT?
TECHNICALLY: Very feasible. Strong FOSS alternatives exist for everything:
Windows → Linux (Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora)
Office → OnlyOffice, LibreOffice
Exchange/Teams → Matrix/Element, Nextcloud
SQL Server → PostgreSQL, MariaDB
Benefits: No per-seat licenses, data sovereignty, transparent security, longer hardware life, no forced obsolescence.
THE REAL CHALLENGE: Organizational, not technical
Legacy Windows-only apps & VBA macros (need rewriting or VMs)
User retraining & change management (people lose muscle memory)
Political will & leadership commitment (critical!)
External partner expectations (.docx, Outlook, Teams)
SUCCESS FACTORS (proven by Lyon & Gendarmerie):
• Strong political backing at highest levels
• Adequate budget & realistic timeline
• Comprehensive training programs
• Willingness to maintain hybrid systems during transition
• Local/regional procurement (Lyon: 100% French contractors)
CURRENT MOMENTUM:
Denmark, Germany (Schleswig-Holstein), Netherlands, Italy, and Slovenia are all pursuing similar digital sovereignty initiatives through FOSS
Bottom line: #France proves that digital sovereignty through open source works at massive scale (103K+ workstations). They're not reinventing wheels—they're making smart use of mature, proven technology with European hosting and governance.
