The new UNBRK HEX boards have arrived! An improved version of the UNBRK, this ultra-compact prototyping board for QFP48/64/100/144 MCUs has wider trace geometry for better low-power performance, provisions for header pins, and an improved, unique 0201 prototyping grid to experiment with components reclaimed from #ewaste. #openhardware released under the CERN-OHL-S and supported by @nlnet and @NGIZero, you can find its repository at https://repo.unbina.re/unbinare/UNBRK_HEX #fosdem2026

Thankful to Nanoraptor/Dana (will tag her elsewhere) for inadvertently reminding me to write this down. XD
Welp, I'm back in the saddle, I guess? Writing this gave me some nummy dopamine, so thank God for that!!!
Also, man is imgur ever a dreadful webshite. Just horrifying to use. XD

Thank you to the attendees of the workshop Microsoldering E-Waste with the UNBRK today at the Ewiger Lötworkshop Assembly in hall H! Also many thanks to @marove for making space available and helping us get settled. 🔬

We had an event last night at a low income housing community here in Olympia. We brought some Nixbooks, gave them away and showed people how to use them.
These people are NOT technical and still all said that Nixbook was far easier to use than any other computer they had used in the past.
All these laptops were headed for the scrapyard, but now thanks to Linux are out there changing peoples lives. :)

Such a device should be in LAN and controlled by something like @homeassistant, firewalled off from the internet.
I dont see why it should work otherwise, other than it was never a good product from the start
New blog post: "erase startup-config" isn't enough
Yikes, excellent blog post on why companies really need to erase all of the data off of network equipment they send to recycle.
I'm bleeding right now because of capitalism.
Let me explain one by one:
* capitalism produces shitty products that have to be replaced regularly
* they send them in oversized cardboard boxes to be able to add more plastic around the product
* the cardboard box is more durable than the product
* i have more than once been yelled at by neighbors for putting boxes in the wastepaper bin without making them smaller first (usually they were filled with wastepaper, but the neighbors didn't see that)
* if capitalism didn't produce so much garbage, or there was enough money for a more frequent garbage collection, the neighbors wouldn't be stingy about space in the bin
* but capitalism wants us to be angry and miserable
* to avoid getting yelled at again I just tried to crunch a very big, very sturdy box
* I stepped on it
* the box didn't give in
* i slipped
* fell
* and hit my head
* hard
Die capitalism, die!

Nearly 20 years old, LEGO NXT is now running #MicroPython! 😀
LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 (2013) is still the first priority, but we're pulling along NXT (2006) as we go. Much of it is is already working.
Thanks @schodet @danderson and many others.

Think NetBSD is just some spooky, complicated thing for old-school hackers? Nah.
But all that legendary portability and rock-solid reliability? That doesn't happen by magic.
Every stable update, cool new feature, and wild new platform it supports (yes, even your toaster) comes from the hard work of the NetBSD community. And honestly, they're powered by support from people just like you.
When you donate to the NetBSD Foundation, you're directly helping to:
Keep NetBSD's code clean, secure, and ready for whatever's next.
Supercharge the build systems and infrastructure that our devs live on.
Cook up more docs, guides, and resources for new users and seasoned pros.
Make sure "Of course it runs NetBSD" stays a free-for-everyone reality.
Your contribution is what keeps NetBSD stable, modern, and running on (almost) everything. Pitch in to support the work that keeps #NetBSD awesome!

Happy International E- waste day.
...Also happy Microsoft end-of-life for Windows 10 day.
It's estimated that 400-600 million computers still run Windows 10, and many of those don't meet the higher specs required for Win 11, which in addition to more RAM and a faster CPU includes having UEFI bios.
For those with some level of tech literacy upgrading to Linux is an obvious workaround, but the sad truth is that enormous volumes of ewaste will be generated by this unnecessary act of corporate greed.

Have Micro$oft really chosen to EoL Windows 10 on international e-waste day?
Both events are on October 14th.
