A wooden relief depicting the 1945 U.S. atomic bombing of Hiroshima, long displayed at an art gallery, has returned to the junior high school where it was created about 50 years ago after alumni restored it. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2026/01/21/japan/society/hiroshima-atomic-bomb-relief/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #japan #society #hiroshima #atomicbombings #wwii #students #schools #museums #saitama
This flare gun (I think it's a flare gun) was in some of my father's stuff. He was a WWII Navy vet and served in the Pacific. He did not collect or keep a lot of military stuff so I assume it's from his service. I've tried searching for flare gun pics, including japanese, chinese, vietnamese, and korean, but nothing even looks close. Anyone have a guess about approximate age & country of origin? #ww2 #wwii #military #antiques

A friend’s dad told me a story the other week about his grandmother, who was part of the resistance against the fascist regime back in Italy during WWII.
She’d frequently have incriminating documents and plans in her house. One day, Mussolini’s soldiers were on patrol, knocking on doors of suspected resistance members and they came to inspect her house. She had a large map of a planned sabotage operation out in the living room.
So she had her husband open the door while she hid the map in the piano stool and sat down. When the authorities came in, she was playing the piano, welcoming them with a smile. She continued playing the entire time they searched the house, pretending it was in their honor.
Nobody asked to check the piano.
