If you attended #FediForum before, you now should have received an invite to our upcoming un-workshop on "Growing the Open Social Web".
It's intended to be half way between unconference (agenda is entirely open) and workshop (focused, with up-front paper submissions).
This un-workshop is a bit of an experiment, but then, the topic is important, and many people in the community have very specific thoughts on this topic that are worth being laid out up-front.
1/3
So, if you care about this topic, please join us March 2.
More info and registration: https://fediforum.org/2026-03-growing-open-social-web/
Note: this #un-workshop is intended to be independent of protocols, projects, communities etc as long as we are talking #open, because we have a barn to raise here, and everybody's constructive contributions are welcome.

Rojava Is Fighting for Its Survival
> For days now, the Syrian interim government, together with Islamist mercenaries, has been carrying out attacks on Rojava, a de facto autonomous region in northeastern Syria. Not only is a humanitarian #catastrophe imminent, but also the end of the #Kurdish self-government.
> [..] After the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024, the Islamist militia Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), under Ahmed al-Sharaa, seized control of large parts of the region. As a historic al-Qaeda affiliate, HTS lacks both viable administrative structures and broad societal legitimacy.
> Nevertheless, Western states, especially the United States, have signaled an early strategic interest in the militia’s political rise. For the United States, the UK, and the EU, al-Sharaa appears as a weak actor that does not control large parts of the country and can thus be easily co-opted into long-term geopolitical interests in the Middle East. Since seizing power, HTS has presented a diplomatic front to the outside world, while repression and #massacres are the rule internally. Alawites in Latakia, Druze in Suweida, and now Kurds have been targeted.

“The officer then said that even a swift return of America to its former role won’t matter.
Because “we will never fucking trust you again.”
The Americans at the table seemed somewhat startled by the heat of that pronouncement. I agreed with it entirely. So, it seemed to me, did most of the non-Americans.
… it was still being talked about the next day. “Thank God,” one allied official said to me. “Someone had to tell them.””
