Advocacy opportunity 📣 BCCDC is currently assessing BC’s wastewater surveillance program. Do the survey here: https://ubc.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5bVmczsX2GeocuO
Wastewater testing is an “early warning system” to monitor community illness levels, including surges & new variants. Clinical data (like rising hospitalizations & deaths) are lagging indicators, making wastewater monitoring an essential tool for pandemic preparedness and risk assessments. Unfortunately, BC drastically downgraded their testing program in Sept 2025 - they stopped testing a third of the wastewater treatment plants, reduced sampling to only once a week (it was previously 3 times a week), and reduced sequencing to once every two weeks.
This is our chance to let BC know:
👉 wastewater testing is essential
👉 we don’t want any more cuts
👉 we want them to improve the program!
The survey only takes a few minutes & is anonymous. You can also learn more about BC’s wastewater program here: https://www.bccdc.ca/our-services/programs/wastewater-surveillance

"RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) was notified of a confirmed case of measles that traveled through Washington Dulles International Airport Saturday, January 24. The person is a resident of another state. To protect the patient’s privacy, VDH will not provide any additional information about the patient. Health officials are coordinating an effort to identify people who might have been exposed, including contacting potentially exposed passengers on specific flights...."

This is a huge mark of shame for the UK.
There is absolutely no reason why one of the world's richest countries shouldn't be able to keep measles at bay.
The causes are no doubt complex, but this really should be a solvable problem for a rich country with the political will to solve it.

#Measles is back. What does that mean?
James Alwine of Defend Public Health tells The Guardian: “We’ve lived in the golden age of medicine for so long that there are so many people who have never seen these diseases, don’t even think about them, don’t even know they exist any more,” Alwine said. “Or people think they’ve been eliminated, but they’re not. They’re just waiting.”

Would the #CDC's principal deputy director view it as a public health loss for the US if the country loses its #measles elimination status? "Not really," Dr. Ralph Abraham said at a press conference today. https://www.statnews.com/2026/01/20/cdc-measles-briefing-lost-elimination-status-cost-of-doing-business/
International health authorities are meeting in April to determine if the U.S. has lost its measles-free designation. While the semantics over whether the West Texas outbreak ended in 2025 or simply moved to other states, experts agree: the U.S. has a measles problem. Read more from @AssociatedPress

I had my MMR titers checked at the end of last year. One M (measles) and the R (rubeola) were fine... but I had no immunity for the other M (mumps). So I went in and got an MMR vaccination shot. Easy peasy.
Dear Gen X: Please go get tested for measles immunity. Every single one of my friends who was tested at various points in their life (started working at a hospital, went back to school, etc) found they had no immunity. I just found out myself, and it's probably been like that for a long time. I got a shot a few days ago. #measles #GenX #PSA
