Meta on Wednesday announced it’s expanding ads on Threads to all users globally. The expansion, which starts next week, will be gradual, the company says, noting it may take months for the full rollout to complete.

who, who could have predicted? ok, pretty much everybody predicted this at the time ... but other than that, who, who could have predicted?

It's interesting to reread my "Embrace, Extend, and Exploit" article from late 2023. Meta has certainly been exploiting their fedi adventure for all it's worth but they've backed off on their embrace and haven't gone the "decentralized surveillance capitalism" route i thought they might. The strong resistance from #FediPact and the Free Fediverse is certainly a factor, although not the only one. But, just like fascists everywhere, they're not going away, so we need to stay vigilant.

On the Threads numbers, your theory that they're counting people on Instagram and get shown a Threads post is certainly plausible.

Details aside though the most likely explanation seems to me that Meta is lying (as they have about numnbers in the past -- remember the "pivot to video" lolsob).
