Yet another processing of the same data from last Christmas, with a dedicated lucky-imaging software this time (Autostakkert, on Linux with Wine). Yeah it gets more details than my naive try :)
This is another picture I took in my last trip, but I had not published until now because I've spent the last couple of weeks processing it to get it to a point I was somewhat happy with.
Even when it's not perfect this is my best capture of the Orion and Running Man Nebulae so far, and while there's room for improvement, there's many things I love about it. #astrophotography

Look, it's not much, but I'm quite happy with the level of detail I was able to pull out from this mush of pixels 😅

While in Arizona, we wanted to take advantage of the Dark Sky certified areas for night photography. I've never tried this before, but I had so much fun and want to learn more. In this first attempt, it appears that I captured a galaxy. Any expert night photographers that can confirm? It's half way down from the top, closer to the right side.

Something small transited the moon as I was looking through my telescope last night, crossing in a straight line in a southwesterly direction (relative to the moon’s face). Too distant to be a plane, I think. A Starlink satellite? The ISS? Taken on January 31 at 5:55pm in Brooklyn. Would be interesting to find out what it was.

took this hand held from inside the city with a 300mm lens. Not too bad. My first success at astrophotography
This shot was taken on November 28, 2022 by Artemis 1, at its farthest distance from earth (430,000 km) and 77,000 km from the moon.
It was a rare opportunity to see both celestial bodies aligned in this same field of view.

The moon last night was bonkers cool, and cute lil Jupiter is there too!

🪼The Jellyfish Nebula
This thing is a bit tricky to get from down here, but the weather cooperated between xmas and new year and I was able to snap a few nights worth of data of this scene in Gemini.
On the right, a relatively bright supernova remnant makes a jellyfish shape. That thing exploded probably some tens of thousands of years ago.
To its left is a region of gas that is *forming* stars. It is much fainter and doesn’t have a popular name, its is simply known by a catalog number - Sharpless 249. Its shape most reminds me of one of the dancing raw chickens in the Sledgehammer video.
This is about 7 hours of narrowband Ha/[OIII] data with a William Optics RedCat 61, Altair Astro 6nm duo band filter and ASI294MC Pro camera.
