A mate searched for 'Olympic snowboard halfpipe final 2026' using #AI in #BraveBrowser, and it came back with the following:

"The men's snowboard halfpipe final at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina took place on Friday, February 13, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. EST (19:30 Milano Cortina time) at the Livigno Snow Park in Valtellina.

The qualification round occurred on Wednesday, February 11, with the top 12 athletes advancing to the final.
Australia’s Scotty James emerged as the standout performer, securing a record-extending fifth Laax Open victory in January 2026, which positioned him as a top contender.
Canada’s Éliot Grondin won the World Cup silver in snowboard cross shortly before the Olympics, adding to the competitive depth.
The final was broadcast live on NBC, Peacock, and USA Network, with re-airings available on Peacock and USA Network.
For viewers, the event was accessible via Peacock, NBC Olympics, and the NBC Sports app, with live streaming available on mobile, tablet, and connected TV devices."

Note the dates and past-tense 🙄

Fucking bullshit machines 🤬

AI slop hurts your soul.

It makes you: distrustful, dismissive of creative works, uncreative, derivative, imaginatively stunted, unreflective, dependant, it robs you of the satisfaction and growth granted by the creative process and it poisons you with all the same cultural biases taken from the training data.

AI robs people of imagination and the drive to create and instead produces output that is pastiche on steroid, uninspired unchallenging slop, every little detail crafted without personality or opinion with nothing to say except "this might vaguely remind you of something good that already existed"

I am also particularly concerned about the rise of chatbots pretending to be humans for political purposes.

LLMs are a Cognitohazard

I've seen a bunch of generally reasonable people say some pretty weird things about LLMs and I want to talk about them.

How many #chatgpt users does it take to change a bulb?

Two.

One for writing a prompt and a second for looking at the right answer on #Reddit.

Interesting article. I guess the problem is about trying to fix the symptoms instead of the actual problem. A big issue is that the algorithms in use by Big Tech social media companies tends to favor content like this. If not, we would all just stop following people that share stuff like this. Instead it is forced on us like a Copilot.

The only answer is to ban user profiling and use of said profiling for ad and content selection.

"Artificial intelligence researchers are grappling with a problem core to their field: how to stop so-called “AI slop” from damaging confidence in the industry’s scientific work.

AI conferences have rushed to restrict the use of large language models for writing and reviewing papers in recent months after being flooded with a wave of poor AI-written content.

Scientists have warned that the surge of low-quality AI-generated material risks eroding trust and the integrity of the sector’s research by introducing false claims and made-up content.

“There is a little bit of irony to the fact that there’s so much enthusiasm for AI shaping other fields when, in reality, our field has gone through this chaotic experience because of the widespread use of AI,” said Inioluwa Deborah Raji, an AI researcher at the University of California, Berkeley.

Recent studies have highlighted the prevalence of the technology in AI research. In August, a study by Stanford University found that up to 22 per cent of computer science papers contained LLM usage."

An AI-generated blog on a tour company’s website has landed tourists in hot water — and not the kind they were looking for — after it emerged the “tranquil” northern Tasmania hot springs it recommended don’t actually exist.

Something I didn't share during the weeklong frozen pipe saga (mostly followers only) is that a few people recommended ChatGPT to get ideas.

"It's great! You can talk to it..."

I cringed inwardly. I think it was inward. I wanted to scream, but did not.

"Yeah, I work in tech. I know how it works and I won't go near it. Search worked fine. The Bob Vila website had good ideas."

This conversation took place at my local building supply store's project desk.

One of the staff piped up: "Bob is great!"

The acolytes weren't interested.

I don't currently technically work in tech, but close enough. I have IT training. I work in the online business world. I used ChatGPT a few years ago b/c a client required it, before I knew what was really going on.

Anyway. I didn't have the spoons to explain the multiple harms, or the hilarious and horrifying inaccuracies which were particularly relevant in this situation.

Inaccuracies like the viral story about using glue to stick cheese to pizza.

Or the lesser-known story about cleaning the wound and applying a bandage before putting a turkey in the oven to roast – the "intelligence" totally missing the mark on roasting a turkey with dressing. (I suspect this is cultural, "dressing" vs "stuffing.")

And then there's the story, published on Futurism, where ChatGPT recommended mixing bleach and vinegar for cleaning – which creates potentially lethal chlorine gas. How many people would know that?

The lesson: Never, ever trust a large language model aka "AI" with anything that could harm you, your family, furkids, vehicle, or home. Never.

There is zero intelligence here. It's scraping, blending, and predicting. It's a bloody damn algorithm.

Also, "AI" is a vague term that applies to many things, coined in the 1950s. It's devolved into a marketing term that benefits the billionaire bros to the exclusion of everything else that could be beneficial.

And now I will use my soapbox for kindling. So tired of all this shit.
