I use #GrapheneOS for the same reason I use #Linux. I want control of the device I own, and I don't need a corporation making decisions for me without my consent.

Fin sak på kode24 om hvor dumt det er at Vipps ikke funker uten google play services. https://www.kode24.no/artikkel/ikke-mulig-a-bruke-vipps-og-samtidig-vaere-fri-fra-amerikansk-big-tech/255391

Uninstalled #NovaLauncher from my phone because they added ads and whatnot. Not opposed to paying for a launcher but that rollout gave me bad vibes.
Would prefer a reliable #FOSS alternative. I mainly liked Nova because of the dock and I found it easy to customize. I'm definitely not a power user.
But looked in the F-Droid store and there are WAY too many launchers, lol.
What FOSS launchers have folks found useful on #Android? (I'm running #GrapheneOS)
Hey #GrapheneOS folks, any news about that second OEM that would support your images? I might need to buy a new phone for work, and it would be nice to have someone that really supported you instead of what happens with Pixels...
Also, I've switched from Signal to Molly (https://molly.im) as part of my experiment in "how long can I get away with not installing Google Play Services on #GrapheneOS?"
Weirdly, the only app which absolutely refused to work without Google Play Services so far is BrainFM (https://brain.fm)
@GrapheneOS @attilax @LearnToLivePrivate @RustRaven @jmoupah @Yrrussaj @sebsauvage @jolla Hey Graphene OS folks.
First, it's really great that you guys have created a security focused deGoogled Android operating system.
Given the problems of American big tech, I applaud you for creating an alternative.
So full credit where credit is due.
That being said, constantly badmouthing every other non-Apple and non-Google smartphone maker and operating system is not a good look.
And jumping into any thread on Mastodon where there's a mention of another alternative smartphone maker or OS to badmouth them is not a good look.
You say Jolla is no good. SailfishOS is no good. Fairphone is no good. Murena is no good. CalyxOS is no good. Dumbphones are no good.
I'd imagine you'd probably win more people over if you talked more about why people should choose Graphene instead why they shouldn't choose one of the others.
Because right now, there are tradeoffs with every mobile OS.
That includes Graphene.
For example, there are people for whom limiting their exposure to Google and Apple is more important than choosing the most locked down option available.
For such people, needing to buy a Google Pixel phone to run Graphene is a massive negative.
That's even if the Google Pixel is the best hardware from a security perspective.
And in that case, yeah there are other options that may be a better fit for those people.
There's another issue.
There seems to be many Reddit threads and YouTube videos and blogs out there from people who were enthusiastic about Graphene, but have soured on it.
And the funny thing is there's a pattern to it. "Cult-like" and "toxic" seems to be phrases that tend to be used a lot.
I've also noticed a recurring pattern you put for why the other alternatives are bad is because people connected with those businesses or companies badmouth Graphene.
It seems to me like Graphene constantly bags those other projects. When anyone connected with those projects responds, that response is presented by you guys as evidence of bullying and harassment, without that context.
And the recurring line about how people should just stick with iOS or Google Android if they don't choose Graphene? Just shameful. And completely misses the point of why some people are looking for alternative platforms in the first place.
And the more people who choose an alternative OS, the more normal it becomes to do it, which ultimately leads to more people looking at alternatives like Graphene.

@attilax @LearnToLivePrivate @RustRaven @jmoupah @Yrrussaj @sebsauvage @jolla Unlike SailfishOS, AOSP is open source and therefore it's possible to build GrapheneOS on top of it. AOSP has far better privacy and security than SailfishOS which brings the lower security of desktop operating systems to mobile.
Jolla has spent years attacking AOSP-based projects as a whole which includes us. You only think they should not be criticized in response to that because you're against AOSP-based projects.

If you could pick one non-U.S. tech, product, or service to switch to, what would you recommend, and why? Open-source and self-hosting options welcome!
@zackwhittaker #Nextcloud self hosted for calendars, address books and files. #GrapheneOS without Google Play Services and Google Accounts. Family approved, three devices so far, more to come. Works like a charm. 💪
I have flirted with the idea of a #Jolla phone - I do like the idea of a Linux mobile.
But there are three apps that I need that don't run at all without Google Play Services (GPS).
In #GrapheneOS, I can sandbox these safely with an account-free, permissions-limited GPS - something you can't do with Jolla's #SailfishOS.
Maybe the #EU needs to view GPS as a monopoly and take steps to make future 3rd party non-Google Android apps function without it.
That would certainly be in Jolla's favour.
If you're in the US and you want to reduce the risk the vendor will fuck you over on behalf of the government without looking suspicious? Much as it pains me to say it, Apple's track record in refusing to assist the FBI in the San Bernardino case is a strong signal there
@mjg59 This only holds true if you blindly trust #Apple & the security level of their software.
Their policies may change any time as we've seen in many cases of big corps already.
Their ability to provide secure software is mostly a myth from old times. They pushed extremely embarrassing security bugs multiple times which not only means that their testing processes are insufficient.
https://karl-voit.at/cloud/ has a few of their failures with respect to #privacy & #security.
Having absolute trust in a shareholders obliged company, you may face massive backfire some day.
If you are *really* looking for maximum level of protection, there's nothing better as a #Pixel 8 or higher (also from 2nd hand market) with #GrapheneOS flashed (it's very easy via web browser + USB cable and a 2nd #Android device) and a self-chosen level of #Google integration.
You may go without any Google service at all or you can opt in for a sandboxed version of them.
HTH
Even if you don't have a luxury of using @GrapheneOS - follow them for brilliant insights on security, such as these
Java/Kotlin are memory safe languages, as is Rust. The majority of new code added to Android is written in memory safe languages.
Android is Linux and works fine with regular Linux kernels.
The Linux kernel is one of the major security weaknesses of Android due to being a massive monolithic kernel with no internal isolation/sandboxing and lack of memory safe languages.
At least I can now continue to use GrapheneOS with a clear conscience, which is an incredible relief for me and my workflow! I bought a Pixel 10 Pro XL shortly after it was released, which then sat in storage for a long time because porting it to GrapheneOS took longer than expected “thanks” to the new restrictions imposed by Google (which was not GrapheneOS's fault, but Google's attempt to screw with custom ROMs).
Since this device is practically brand new, hopefully it will work and receive GrapheneOS updates until this fascist nightmare in the US is over. Or until there is an independent European solution during this time. My dream would be a completely Android-independent, free smartphone operating system, as Huawei has achieved in China.
