It appears Linux root-on-ZFS is a mess. No standard way to do it. Kernel updates require recompiling ZFS. Boot environments are a cornucopia of constantly evolving hacks.

If you're actually using #ZFS on root, on #Debian, what's your preferred hack to make that happen? #sysadmin

I suspect #openzfsmastery might need to assume root on extFS and data on ZFS, leaving root-on-ZFS for the advanced user or a terminal chapter.

Every now and then when I come back to use my daily driver running #Debian #Linux, I got surprised why #apt still does not provided short-formed commands like #pkg in #FreeBSD and #pkgin in #NetBSD do such as:

# FreeBSD
pkg ins vim # same as pkg install vim
pkg sea vim # same as pkg search vim

# NetBSD
pkgin in vim # same as pkgin install vim
pkgin se vim # same as pkgin search vim

# while in Debian
apt search vim # no apt se/sea
apt install vim # no apt in/ins

I'm in the process of putting together a real home server for the first time. In the past, I've used repurposed hardware, but this time I have a 4 port NAS on which I plan to install Debian.

I'm planning to run Docker so that I can run:

1) pi-hole for DNS based network-level ad-blocking and stop-shit-that-thinks-it-is-smart-from-calling-home (migrated from different hardware)
2) calibre-web for ebook management and sharing
3) immich for photo and video management
4) ssh, stfp, and rsync for general file storage
5) plex for media (though it may be a while before I do anything useful with this)

Are there any other (self-hosted) services I should look into, especially since I will have serious storage space for the first time?

My one brain implant rule: all software must be in #Debian `stable`/`main`. This means:

a) it, and all dependencies, are DFSG-compatible https://www.debian.org/social_contract#guidelines

b) and have 3 years support by the Debian security team https://www.debian.org/security/faq#lifespan

c) and maybe 5 years https://www.debian.org/lts/

d) and passed the freeze process with no RC-bugs that would have kept them out of the release https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-faq/ftparchives#frozen

…and also still not too hot on the idea 🙂

Announcing a new #Guix release with version 1.5.0.

Guix is a rolling release meaning users receive the latest updates continuously.
This release updates all the installation media when setting up Guix on a new system.

It can be used as a package manager on top of an existing Linux distribution (e.g. #debian, #ubuntu, #suse, #fedora, #archlinux, etc). Or it can be used as a stand-alone #linux distribution installed as #desktop #server or in the #cloud.

Since the previous release Guix has added 12,525 new packages and 29,932 packages have been updated.

- #KDE Plasma and a #declarative configuration service

- There are around 40 new system services to choose from such as Forgejo Runner and RabbitMQ

- Full-source bootstraps of the #Zig and #Mono their compilers are now available

- Other major updates include GCC 15.2.0, Emacs 30.2, Icecat and Librewolf 140, LLVM 21.1.8 and Linux-libre 6.17.12.
