Fluffy, round wren I met recently. Seems to be handling the cold winter fine.

Photograph of a small brown and beige bird on a tree branch against a nearly colorless winter background. It's very fluffy and round with a thin beak and slender, upright tail feathers.

Finding joy in the smallest things is an act of defiance in this sad state of the world. May this puffin bring a tiny bit of joy into your life today.

A puffin standing on the edge of a cliff looking as if it was smelling the clump of pink sea thrifts flowers next to it.

#Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:

At a popular roadside cafe on a rainy day, two women (20s?) alight from a campervan. Go inside and order two full fry-up breakfasts. Wake up yawns. Misty rain outside the windows. People coming and going. Some off for grand national park adventures, some dropping in for coffee to start their work day.

A small human (5?) wearing a camo tracksuit and sensible gumboots walks into a country supermarket.
Mum pats her pockets and says: "Oh no! I left my wallet in the car." Small Human nods. "I'll look after the trolley then." He stands guard. A very important small serious sentinel.

A group of runners, soggy from rain with damp hair and clothes, laughing and chatting, tumble into a bar. They pick their chairs and get on with the serious business of ordering burgers and fries just as the rain picks up outside. Water splashing on pavement.

A tiny human (1?) sitting in a high chair at a country cafe has a small toy octopus and would like the world to know it. Every time new people walk through the door, she raises it, makes a loud hooting noise and waggles it alluringly. Everyone must be in AWE of her mighty beasty friend.

A woman (60s?) is walking along with a friend. She stops suddenly and says in a pensive voice. "Ya know what would make everything better right now? A stuffed spud."*
Her friend nods in fervent agreement.

You're looking at a gaggle of white and grey geese in a green grassy field bordered with a wall of trees and greenery. They look unassuming, especially since you're looking at them over a wooden fence that's rather picturesque with the odd bit of moss growing on it. But do not be fooled. This is a gangster geese posse, escaping the scene of a crime while they terrorised a human by hissing and honking and generally making themselves feathery nuisances. In fact, from this day forward I am referring to these geese as battle geese. They won the war. I had to have a second cup of tea while waiting them out as they patrolled in front of my car door. These geese are walking away from us, there are around seven of them in their battalion. While looking at these geese you would hear honking, an author swearing and telling them to think about mending the errors of their nefarious ways. You'd also hear the sound of birdsong that I'm going to believe was not bird laughter in the trees and you'd be smelling wet greenery and pine trees after a night of steady rain.

An osprey at Dillon Beach in Marin County, California, today. No dramatic talon-first plunges into the water, but still pretty gnarly.
