Extremely newb GoToSocial ( @gotosocial) question: I want to move my single-user instance to a new server. Can I just install GtS on the new server and, like, copy-paste the database and everything over?
Can any instance operators offer an explanation as to why federating with Mastodon from an instance not running their software tends to be more difficult?
I've noticed lately that when viewing a profile from a Mastodon instance, their post history tends to be incomplete or otherwise missing. Any posts that are made recently tend to have a significant delay or don't show up on their profile at all.
I know that you can view the content from the remote instance in question for a complete profile, that you need to do so however does seem to be a failing on the part of the server software to properly federate and populate posts.

Are you running a server on the Fediverse, either Mastodon or some other type?
Would you like it to be listed on the human-curated server directory at https://fedi.garden/fedi-gardens-full-server-list ?
Is it compatible with all seven points at https://fedi.garden/about-this-site ?
If the answer to all these is yes, please message my other account at:

Let me know a little bit about your server in your message, or send a link to your About page 🙂

If you run your own Mastodon server and wondering how to manage storage, there's a useful video by @fedihost about it:

If you're running a public Fedi server, it might be a good idea to have a personal or alternative account that isn't on your server.
If your server goes down and all your accounts are on it, there will be an information black hole about what happened as all your contact accounts will be broken.
There have been several cases where servers went down for days and people worried they had closed down permanently, but they were actually technical difficulties that took days to fix.

If your server is run by a team of admins/mods, it's a good idea to list the accounts for your team on your server's "About page", or at least two of them. (With their permission, of course!)
There may be urgent reasons why other people need to reach your server's admin/mod team, for example attacks routed via your server etc.
Mastodon and many other Fedi platforms only show the admin's account by default, so if the admin is unreachable there's no obvious way to contact your team.

In the wake of Bluesky's hosting and verification of ICE (more info at https://social.growyourown.services/@FediTips/115907813290485171 ), many admins have defederated the Bluesky bridge. If you run your own Fedi server, you can block the bridge by defederating this domain:
brid.gy
This will automatically defederate all the bridge's subdomains as well.
If you're using Mastodon, there are instructions for how to defederate servers at https://fedi.tips/how-to-defederate-fediblock-a-server-on-mastodon
