Back in 2020, tech companies expounded about how important it was to "bring your whole self to work." Now, they want you to leave that girl or guy at home, while you, of course, return to the office. What gives? @mmasnick writes for @techdirt.com about how it was always just a business decision — and that explains the rightward shift across Silicon Valley too.

Lesson from Minnesota, Denmark, and now perhaps Harvard: Stand up to the bully.
Trump Drops Demand for Cash From Harvard After Stiff Resistance https://www.nytimes.com/2026/02/02/us/politics/trump-harvard-payment.html?smid=tw-share
Just imagine if the University of Michigan had been as brave as Harvard instead of closing their DEI office when trump demanded it.
Progress requires electing people from groups the system isn't working for, because gaps are invisible if they don't apply to you.
This applies to every context — civic life, work, school. That's the point of #DEI.
I don't think people who are anti-DEI are stupid. But I do think they're lazy & entitled.
yet another case of "don't comply in advance, assholes"--turns out it was both illegal and unnecessary (as well as shortsighted and immoral) to comply with EO's scrubbing DEI in higher ed. who knew!

You can make your posts more accessible and inclusive by putting hashtags at the end.
When you place hashtags after the main text of a post, screen‑reader users can hear the core message first without interruption. This simple adjustment ensures that blind and visually‑impaired persons receive the essential information clearly and promptly.
Beyond accessibility, this small practice reflects a genuine commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
It's always good to think how the digital content is experienced by everyone, so we can create a more welcoming and inclusive digital space.
As inclusion is an important aspect of communication and communities, let's remember about it. Small thing to do, but improves experience of so many people.

Did you know it's been 2 years since SB17, #Texas' anti-DEI campus law went into effect?
I'm working on a survey of #LGBTQ+ orgs affected by this law, for The Barbed Wire. If you were part of, or know of a campus org that shut down or was forced to change goals due to SB17, please get in touch.

#Mark #Zuckerberg’s decision to cut off funding to the pro‑immigration group FWD.us
marks a sharp turn away from the high-profile social advocacy that once defined his philanthropy...
even as #MacKenzie #Scott is emerging as the era’s most aggressive backer of equity- and #DEI-driven causes.
The split shows a broader divergence in tech philanthropy:
one billionaire channeling resources into #science and #AI infrastructure,
the other pouring unrestricted billions into institutions serving communities historically excluded from power and wealth.

Update. It's rare to see a journal editorial call for #MultilingualResearch. Here's one from _Applied and Environmental Microbiology_, published by the American Society of Microbiology.

Language barriers "do more than prevent access to opportunities. They cement unfair assumptions about scientific competence and preferentially amplify voices that are proficient, or perceived to be proficient, in the dominant language, shaping scientific discourse in narrow and exclusive ways. This editorial explores how linguistic bias sustains professional hierarchies and restricts scientific progress. It also highlights our journal’s initiatives to overcome language-based barriers in publishing and foster equitable participation in scientific exchange."
