Yes, they do. The amazing thing is that so many activists, politicians and journalists on the left have chosen to accept this type of censorship as necessary and inevitable. Or maybe they just choose not to think about it at all. We will look back on these times and marvel that we gave the tech lords so much power.

@mastodonmigration I’ve become so ‘uncomfortable’ with pre-filtered feeds, where news is picked, sorted, chosen… when I can be here, and make my own decisions about information, without worrying about offending or appeasing anyone. #Fediverse #Mastodon
The act of following someone is a kind of feed. The difference is that you make the choice. You assess their credibility and perspectives and make a decision to accept being influenced by what they send your way.
The difference with algorithms is that the influence is all surreptitious and sneaky.

@mastodonmigration The fun fact here is that an algorithm would actually show these topics as being trending. The fact that they are not trending shows that the owners of BS decided to manually intervene and steer the algorithm away from these topics.
