okay, powered through and wrote up a li'l thing about my new #faircamp site, cult of lightbulbs

this was a fun little experiment and may be overkill for quite a lot of folks, but proved to me that it's possible to DIY your own music store / patreon-style offering for very little $ and some light command-line knowledge

"A cool thing is that this is quite affordable — about $92/year. It would be almost free if I wasn’t paying Buttondown to handle the email-newsletter part (there are open-source alternatives here that I haven’t looked into yet)."

After setting up a Ghost instance last year for Disintermedia.net.nz, I learned that the bottleneck you're paying to get through here is the spamcatchers at the major email hosts.

Only a handful of (mostly commercial) services are trusted to send email newsletters. Because they involve sending large volumes of identical email, which to a large email host is indistinguishable from spam.

Ghost.org has a B2B partnership with one of those trusted bulk mailers (MailGun I think), and self-hosted Ghost requires paying for an account on one of these services to send published articles to subscribers.
